IFTA Calculation Method

Route-Based (ZIP Coordinates)
1. Miles Traveled

Miles in each jurisdiction calculated using ZIP coordinates and route analysis.

2. Fuel Consumed

Gallons Consumed = Miles in State ÷ Fleet Average MPG

3. Tax Calculation

Tax Due = Gallons Consumed × State Tax Rate per gallon

4. Net Settlement

Net = Tax Due - Tax Paid at pump. Positive = owe, Negative = credit.

IFTA Formula: Net Tax = (Miles ÷ MPG × Tax Rate) - (Gallons Purchased × Tax Rate)

What is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a tax collection agreement among the 48 contiguous U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces. It simplifies the reporting of fuel use taxes by motor carriers that operate in more than one jurisdiction.

One License

File one quarterly return with your base jurisdiction

58 Jurisdictions

48 U.S. states + 10 Canadian provinces

Quarterly Filing

Due last day of month following quarter end

Who Must File IFTA?

You must file IFTA if your vehicle meets ALL of the following criteria:

Weight Requirement

Vehicle has two axles and GVWR over 26,000 lbs, OR has three or more axles regardless of weight

Combined Weight

Combined GVW/GCW exceeds 26,000 lbs

Interstate Travel

Travels in two or more IFTA jurisdictions

Commercial Use

Used for commercial purposes (for-hire or business transport)

Step-by-Step IFTA Calculation

1

Calculate Total Miles per Jurisdiction

Track every mile driven in each state/province. Our system uses ZIP code coordinates to calculate route-based mileage distribution.

Example: Trip from Chicago, IL (60601) to Dallas, TX (75201)
Total: 920 miles → IL: 168 mi, MO: 285 mi, OK: 187 mi, TX: 280 mi
2

Calculate Fleet Average MPG

Divide total miles by total gallons of fuel purchased during the quarter.

Fleet Average MPG = Total Miles ÷ Total Gallons
Example: 45,000 miles ÷ 7,500 gallons = 6.0 MPG
3

Calculate Gallons Consumed per Jurisdiction

Divide miles in each jurisdiction by your fleet average MPG.

Gallons Consumed = Miles in State ÷ Fleet MPG
Texas Example: 8,500 miles ÷ 6.0 MPG = 1,416.67 gallons consumed
4

Calculate Tax Due & Tax Paid per Jurisdiction

Multiply gallons by state tax rate to get tax amounts.

Tax Due = Gallons Consumed × State Tax Rate
Tax Paid = Gallons Purchased in State × State Tax Rate
Texas: 1,416.67 gal × $0.20/gal = $283.33 tax due
5

Calculate Net Tax (Credit or Balance Due)

Subtract tax paid from tax due for each jurisdiction.

Net Tax = Tax Due - Tax Paid at Pump
Negative = Credit (you get money back)
Positive = Balance Due (you owe taxes)

Filing Deadlines

Q2 April - June July 31
Q3 July - September October 31 Current Quarter

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything owner-operators and fleets ask us about IFTA, answered straight.

How do I use this IFTA calculator?

Open the Calculator tab, type your pickup and delivery ZIP codes (or add states manually), enter your miles and the fuel you bought, and the engine splits everything by state and shows your net tax instantly. To keep what you calculate, register and create your free LoadWrap account: registered users save loads, file whole quarters, track every truck and export the filing-ready PDF.

Can I lower my IFTA bill by choosing where I buy fuel?

Yes, and smart fleets plan around it. Every tax-paid gallon is a credit in the state where you bought it, so buying fuel in higher-rate states you actually drive through builds credits against what you owe there. The cheapest pump price is not always the cheapest gallon once the tax credit is counted. One exception: the Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia surcharge is owed no matter where you fuel. Run your route through this calculator with different fuel stops and compare the net.

How is IFTA tax actually calculated?

Three steps. Fleet MPG = total miles divided by total gallons purchased. Taxable gallons per state = miles in that state divided by fleet MPG. Net tax per state = taxable gallons times the state rate, minus a credit for every tax-paid gallon you bought in that state. Negative means the state owes you a credit.

What are the IFTA surcharge states?

Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia add a surcharge on every gallon consumed in the state. Unlike the base rate, the surcharge gives no credit for fuel purchased there, it is always owed in full. This calculator itemizes the surcharge on its own line, exactly like the official return.

Are the fuel tax rates current?

Yes. Rates refresh every quarter from the official IFTA matrix published at iftach.org. The engine currently runs Q2 2026 rates, the quarter being filed now, including all surcharges, with Q1 2026 available for late filings.

Which jurisdictions are supported?

All 48 contiguous US states plus the 10 Canadian provinces, with provincial rates converted to USD per gallon. Alaska, Hawaii, D.C. and Mexico are not IFTA jurisdictions and are excluded automatically. Oregon shows a $0.00 IFTA rate because it charges a separate weight-mile tax instead.

When are IFTA returns due?

Quarterly, on the last day of the month after the quarter ends: April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day. Filing late costs $50 or 10% of the tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest.

What records do I need to keep for an IFTA audit?

Four years of fuel receipts and mileage records. Receipts should show date, location, gallons, price and vehicle unit. Mileage records should show routes and miles per jurisdiction. LoadWrap accounts store receipts and per-state miles automatically, so an audit is a download, not a panic.
